Mme. Françoise Athénaïs Montespan (1641-1707) was the mistress of Louis XIV. She was maid of honor to Queen Marie Thérèse, his Queen. She bore the king several children. Their education was entrusted to Mme. de Maintenon, who succeeded her in the king’s favor. Montespan was a demon in the advancement of her bastards by Louis, all of whom were given titles and great wealth. It took years to get rid of her.
