Philippe I, duc d’Orleans (1640-1701) known as “Monsieur”, brother of Louis XIV. His homosexual lifestyle was occasionally awkward for Louis. Philippe married twice and had three children. He was credited with the victory of the French at the battle of Kassel in 1677. His patronage of artists and musicians brought forward Molière and Lully.
